East of the eponymous town is some coastal marsh, much diminished in size through development and drainage, though still with some bird life.
Along with marshes, there are some lagoons, reed beds, though small, and some dunes. There are quite a few breeding birds here, many over wintering waterfowl, and many birds passing over in spring, with some 175 species recorded.
