Captain of a commercial ship at 17, Andreas Miaoulis was born on the island of Hydra. He worked as a blockade runner supplying the French during the Napoleonic War and managed to amass a considerable fortune.
In the second year of the Greek revolution he was appointed Admiral of the Greek fleet.
He ran the Turkish blockade of Mesolonghi on several occasions and deafeated the Turkish Navy at near Patra and the combined Turko-Egyptian Navy near Geronda.
