General Information
A Visitor Centre for education and visitors has been formed in the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, founded by the General Secretariat of Research and Technology in the framework of the programme "Open Doors".
The purpose of the Centre is to propagate astronomical knowledge to the public and particularly to students and to inform the public about new astronomical discoveries. This is accomplished through seminars, talks, and observations with the 62.5cm Newall refractor in Penteli and the 1.23m reflector in Kryoneri. In addition, the Centre produces video tapes of astronomical content which are shown to the public in a specially equipped room.
The Visitor Centre is situated in the original building of the Newall
refractor in Penteli Astronomical Station (about 15 km from the center
of Athens). More than 60.000 people and about 2000 schools visited the
Centre since September 1995.
