Enjoy a walking tour around the vibrant and colorful centre of Athens, and experience the daily life of the Athenians. Due to Greece's geographical position, Greeks have been exchanging knowledge, ideas, architecture, music, food and customs for thousands of years with western and eastern countries.
Each interaction through the years has left a different, unique and big impact on our country. Trekking Hellas aims to show you the relationship between eastern and western culture and the different marks left on Greek culture.
Meet at 10.00 am at the entrance of Syntagma Metro Station (Exit Syntagma Square). Your guide holding a Trekking Hellas sign will be waiting for you there.
Start your walking tour through the busy shopping street of Ermou, full of trendy stores and reach the Byzantine church of Kapnikarea. Next, visit the Museum of Greek Folk Musical Instruments which is housed in an old Athenian mansion built in 1842, and includes about 1.200 folk music instruments dating from the 18th century to the present day. Continue towards the central food market of Athens where you will see, smell and experience the atmosphere of the fish, meat and fruit stalls.
Walk down Evripidou street, also known as the “Spice Street”, where you will smell all the different herbs and spices used in Greek cooking. Here you can also find dried vegetables, pulses and all sorts of nuts. Check out the little butcher shop on the same street, full of interesting sausages, pastourma and other smoked and dried meats.
With this short walking tour, you will get a taste of the multicultural identity of the Greeks. Between East & West is what has formed modern Greece!
