There are many stores selling a variety of items from trinkets to those with some practical use such as clothing or food. Monastiraki Square is one of Athens top tourist destinations. There are several interesting sites and historical near by. Please see the walking tour maps for those.

Above and below left are your typical Monastiraki square street scenes. Below center: the nearby ruins of Hadrian's library. And below right, smack dab in the center of the square is that famous temple to culinary mediocrity Mcdonalds. Be sure and order a happy meal pronounced "hapi mill" Actually I prefer Wendy's myself, but the only one I know of in Athens closed to be replaced by the New Attica Mall. Seriously try Thanasi's folks after all...when in Rome.
