Mykonos Synopsis & Map Page 5

Psarou is a jet ski hangout, the biggest resort is Platis Yialos, with scheduled boat excursions to the other beaches and to Delos. Paradise has a campsite (noisy at night with loud music from the bars); there's a diving school here, and a pool-bar restaurant. Reachable via footpath from Platis Yialos (2 km), there are some shade trees and its location protects it from strong north winds. Super Paradise, in a rocky cove around the headland from Paradise, reachable on foot.

Quieter places in this part of the island are Agrari, in a little cove with some foliage, with a good taverna. Long and lovely Kalo Livadi is in a farming valley, reached walking over the peninsula from Elia . On the hills near the beach are some hotels and vacation villas, and there's a taverna. The fishing village of Kalafatis, with a less crowded beach than the others to the west, is the last resort beach on the south coast to which buses go from the town's north station, and was once the port of the ancient citadel of Mykonos, which stood on the small peninsula to the west. Trees here separate the long beach from the facilities along the road. Th In a little cove next to it is Ayia Anna, with a short sandy beach. Tragonisi is the little islet off the east coast of the island, with many caves.

Diving

The ideal month for this sport is September, with excellent visibility (30 meters) and pleasant water temperature (24 degrees Centigrade). To rent diving equipment and participate in guided dives, you must be a certified diver, though others can rent snorkeling gear. There are many centers, some of them offering classes and beach dives, some with websites.

Ano Mera

7 km/4miles east of Hora, this is the only real town other than Hora on Mykonos, and can be reached easily on foot from Panormos Bay. Despite its image as a 'traditional village', Ano Mera has made obvious concessions to the numerous foreign visitors to the island. It has some rooms and decent tavernas; the 16th century monastery of Panayia Tourliani is worth a visit, with a collection of Cretan icons on its huge Italian baroque iconostasis , an 18th century marble baptismal font, and a beautiful carved steeple. A small museum displays wood carvings, needlework, and liturgical vestments. The nearby 12th century Palaiokastro monastery (Darga is its other name) is north of the village, a surprisingly green place. See the Mykonos Greek Islands Guide
